US Open 2009 - Kolman Turiy Memorial started on December 6, 2009 as was planned with 29 participants - a record amount of contenders! This year USA received 15 guests from 3 continents and 7 countries: Antigua, Costa Rica, Haiti, Mali, Russia, Surinam and Trinidad and Tobago. From the USA, there are 14 participants from 5 states: Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, Pennsilvania.
On the opening ceremony the guests were welcomed by Dr. Joseph Leon Paul, the president of ICAONA. In his speech, Dr. Paul gave tribute to Kolman Turiy, his achievements as talented checker player and energetic vice-president of ICAONA. He asked the guests to observe the minute of silence. He further thanked and specially noted all foreign players and wished everyone luck.
After him, the guests were warmly welcomed by Vice Mayor Lewis J. Thaler of the town of Sunny Isles Beach where the tournament is located, who told them many interesting facts about the town.
Finally, Lyublyana Turiy, the main arbiter of US Open 2009 briefly went over the reglament of the competition. She asked that her speech was translated on the languages of all participating countries: French, Russian and Spanish. Every player was also given a paper copy of the regulations on their own language of choice. Opening ceremony concluded with each player drawing his tournament number by picking a suvenir pen from the referees' desk to which a paper with the number was attached.
The ceremony followed by a pizza lunch after which the first round has started.
